Remarkable Mate

Remarkable business & finance

Here’s Why I Think Tomra Systems (OB:TOM) Is An Interesting Stock

It’s only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in ‘sexy’ stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Tomra Systems (OB:TOM). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it’s easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

Tomra Systems’s Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. It certainly is nice to see that Tomra Systems has managed to grow EPS by 18% per year over three years. As a result, we can understand why the stock trades on a high multiple of trailing twelve month earnings.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. While we note Tomra Systems’s EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 8.5% to kr11b. That’s a real positive.

Are Tomra Systems Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a kr88b company like Tomra Systems. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they hold kr157m worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Even though that’s only about 0.2% of the company, it’s enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.

Does Tomra Systems Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

You can’t deny that Tomra Systems has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That’s attractive. I think that EPS growth is something to boast of, and it doesn’t surprise me that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research. So the answer is that I do think this is a good stock to follow along with. Of course, profit growth is one thing but it’s even better if Tomra Systems is receiving high returns on equity, since that should imply it can keep growing without much need for capital.
